Hi!  I am Nancy Bernard, and this is my third year at W.C. Petty.  Prior to working as the library media assistant here at W.C. Petty, I taught middle school for five years.  Once I had my son, I decided to stay home with him for six years before returning to education.  I love teaching and working with students to help them reach their full potential and realize their talents.   I am very excited to work with you and your child this year in the library to help their imagination take flight while reading.  Below you will find some website links that you and your child may find of interest.
The new library looks amazing!  The staff and students are really enjoying the comfortable seating.
April Reading Incentive:  Bookmark Challenge Winners

Each month the LMC will host a school-wide reading incentive.  Students may earn prizes if they complete that month's reading incentive criteria.  The goal of this incentive is to help increase students' reading interest, grow their knowledge and vocabulary, as well as reward them for their hard work.  Each month I will post a link on my webpage with the information for the following month.  Please visit my webpage at the end of each month for the next month's incentive information.
5 Ways to Become a Great Reader (Sponsored by iREAD):
    1.  Read every day
    2. Choose topics that are exciting to read
    3. Read everything that surrounds you such as maps, comics, recipes, signs, posters, magazines and catalogs
    4. Carry a book with you wherever you go
    5. Visit your library often
Last year District 34 brought Makerspaces to the Library Media Centers.  They were a huge hit with the students.
Makerspace centers are back, and the students are super excited!  A Makerspace is a place in which students share equipment, knowledge and interests (especially in computing or technology).  Students work in groups of four and rotate through centers each week.  In the Makerspace centers, they work on projects  such as coding, puzzles, imaginative building with Legos and monthly library activities.  Check out my photo gallery to see some of the fun activities the students are working on this month.

Playaway permission slips were handed out to students during their library visits.  Playaways are pre-loaded, ready to use audiobooks.  They can be a great tool to help improve reading fluency.  If students would like to check out a Playaway, he/she must have a signed permission slip on file.  A copy of the Playaway permission slip in attached. Playaway Permission Slip

I would love to have parent volunteers help out in the LMC.  If you are interested, please contact me @
